Hi, I’m Jason Earle, creator of the GOT MOLD? Test Kit. Thanks for stopping by! I’m often asked how I got into this business, and understandably so. Mold isn’t the most inspiring subject, unless it’s touched you the way it has touched me.

As a child, I was severely asthmatic and allergic to nearly everything in my environment. It was so extreme that I was initially diagnosed — falsely, thank goodness — with Cystic Fibrosis, a terminal illness back then. When we moved out of that musty little farmhouse, all of my symptoms disappeared. We chalked it up to me “growing out” of my asthma, like my grandfather did. I wouldn’t think about it again for over a decade.

As is often the case, my first “aha!” moment came when least expected, while I was relaxing in Hawaii. The local papers were filled with stories about a huge mold problem at the Hilton Kalia Tower on Oahu. One, in particular, caught my attention. An otherwise healthy employee of the hotel was diagnosed with adult-onset asthma, and a slew of new allergies, presumably from his exposure to the moldy conditions in the building. A light bulb went on! Was my childhood illness due to the mold in our home?

I became obsessed with mold, but more specifically, how the buildings we live and work in affect our health. I came back home and got into the business, working for a mold remediation company to learn the ropes. I saw how badly the consumer was being taken advantage of, and within months, I identified the need for a different kind of company; a mold inspection service built on integrity and independence, free of conflicts of interest. We were one of the first companies nationwide to exclusively offer inspections and testing, with no strings attached.

Just as I was getting started, I heard about a well-known dog trainer in Florida who had taught a few canines to detect hidden mold in buildings. It was crazy enough to be brilliant. I hopped on a plane to Florida in order to look more closely; I was instantly sold. What these pups could do was amazing! I was soon introduced to Oreo, a lanky black Lab mix, who would become my cherished partner for nearly twelve years. Word traveled fast, and an avalanche of media exposure led to a groundswell of interest in our service; our phone rang off the hook for years. We did thousands of inspections together and helped hundreds of families regain their health and peace of mind. Over the years, I couldn’t help but be bothered by the fact that mold inspections (and the testing involved), was too expensive for most people. And not every situation calls for a professional inspection, but until now, if you wanted testing done, you didn’t have a choice — it was all or nothing.
